THE CASTLE OF SORT

The town of Sort (692 m above sea level), the centre of Pallars Sobirà, stretches out at the bottom of the valley, on the right bank of the Noguera Pallaresa. To the west are the large circular towers, the Gothic façade (15th century) and the walls of Sort Castle, which has recently undergone a major refurbishment, with the opening of a multi-purpose space inside which houses exhibitions and various activities.

The town expanded at the foot of this complex, following the path traced by the river, as far as carrer Major and the Raval, at the junction of which with the town centre is the Plaça Major, overlooked by the parish church of Sant Feliu. At the beginning of the 20th century, during the construction of the road from Balaguer to the Àneu Valley, the river was diverted, which allowed the creation of the Parc del Riuet and the construction of a new neighbourhood between the town and the new course of the river and the Passeig de la Pallissa.

In recent decades, Sort has expanded to the north, with the creation of the La Solana neighbourhood, to the east, with the Borda de Paisan housing development, and to the south, with the creation of an area of industrial facilities around the Les Vernedes sector.
