Canyoning is a sport for adventurers, lovers of adrenaline, heights, nature and climbing.
Although there are different levels of difficulty, this sport carries a significant risk even at the simplest levels, so you have to know how to use the right techniques to perform canyoning safely.
Schedule the activity
Before embarking on the adventure, we must plan it and take into account some key points to avoid unforeseen events as much as possible.
First of all, we must look for a ravine that fits the experience of the group that is going to carry out the activity. That the guide studies the place previously and knows its most complex points. Knowing the whole route in advance will help enormously to establish schedules according to its length.
You should also know the weather forecast in case the weather conditions were not good and the activity had to be suspended. Days with strong wind, heavy rain and hail should be avoided. Bad weather can be a great inconvenience to carry out the activity correctly and could even put our lives in danger in extreme cases.
Training, even basic, is key to canyoning safely, so before starting the adventure the guide must give all participants a series of guidelines to follow to minimize risk.
Being careful is key
It is essential to start the march with plenty of time, already counting on the fact that there could be various circumstances that delay the group and the activity must end before the light dims too much. We must also thoroughly review all the necessary equipment that we must carry: helmets, wetsuits, ropes, carabiners, etc.
It is essential that the group stay together and not leave any partner alone, and it is also vital that the participants pay attention to the professional guide that accompanies them. Jumping into a pool not indicated by the guide, for example, or not following the instructions when jumping, can cause accidents of various kinds.
It is important to remain calm in the event of an accident. It is always better to act calmly and with a cool head so that panic does not invade us. The first thing to do in case of an accident is to attend to the injured person. Protect her and above all not endanger ourselves or third parties.
Dehydration and hypothermia are very common in canyoning when care is not taken, so it is essential to have a good breakfast and drink water throughout the activity, even if we are not thirsty, especially if we are canyoning with children.
Necessary equipment
Carrying the necessary equipment and in good condition is very important when it comes to canyoning. You can not do this sport if you do not wear the appropriate footwear and clothing, wetsuits and booties if possible. We must also carry some accessories that will protect us from any unforeseen event such as: helmet (always approved), harness, ropes, anchor lines, descender, etc. The guide will know how to advise us in each case.
We cannot forget the survival kit: water, food, first-aid kit, mobile phone with a charged battery (that is submersible or in a watertight compartment that protects it from water), submersible flashlight, whistle, knife,... everything we can use in emergency case. Obviously, it is not necessary for everyone to bring everything, it will be enough for the activity guide and some other participant to take it, depending on the number of people in the group.
If we take into account all these points, canyoning will be much safer and fun will be present at all times!
After the activity, there is nothing like going back to the Hotel Les Brases, showering, having a wonderful dinner at the Les Brases restaurant and finally enjoying a well-deserved rest in the comfortable beds in the room.
